That's 'Sir' Crypto Dad: French order knights former CFTC chair Chris Giancarlo

Former chair of the United States Commodity Futures Trading Commission, Chris Giancarlo (also known as “Crypto Dad”) has been awarded the equivalent to a knighthood by France’s government

Giancarlo tweeted Tuesday that the former head of the CFTC said France’s National Order of Merit had awarded him a Chevalier, which is equivalent to a knighthood. The ceremony took place at the residence of the French ambassador in Washington D.C., and included Rostin Benhnam, Brian Quintenz and Christy Goldsmith Romero. Giancarlo was appointed in May by the order. Phillippe Etienne was France’s ambassador in the United States. He said that the award was partly due to Phillippe’s understanding of the financial markets and the potentials for crypto finance.

Giancarlo stated that “[This award] recognizes and strengthens overseas regulatory ties with many fine public servants during the time of my government service.”

Giancarlo was the chair of CFTC for five year before he resigned in April 2019. Giancarlo was the chair of the CFTC for five years before he resigned in April 2019.

Giancarlo left the CFTC to join the blockchain investment firm CoinFund, where he is a strategic advisor, on the board for the blockchain startup Digital Asset and, briefly, on the board for crypto lending company BlockFi. He is currently a senior counsel at Willkie Farr & Gallagher.

Others who were knighted by their governments before have also joined the crypto space. Sir Richard Starkey, also known for his role as Ringo Starr in the Beatles, launched his own non-fungible tokens line on June 13. William Shatner, a Star Trek actor, tokenized a number of trading cards in 2020. He was inducted into The Order of Canada in 2019, though many believe it is not the same as a knighthood.
